Winter Triathlon Training Tips: What to Wear for Cold Weather Sessions

Did you know that in winter, you could work for the strongest triathlon season of your career? The race calendar might be looking a little empty, but the colder months here in Australia are key to improving your endurance, consistency, and strength before the next block of racing begins.

Of course, it isn’t motivation that is lacking in winter; it’s the right kit. Kit to help make those chillier mornings feel a bit more bearable.

The right winter kit will help you to regulate your temperature, which allows you to continue training, even on those days where the weather just can’t make up its mind.

However, it’s not just kit alone that’ll make your winters better. You need the right training approach, which combines smart session planning with your winter kit to help you make the most out of the off-season.

Here at SCODY, our garments are designed, made, and tested right here in Australia on real Aussie athletes facing real Aussie conditions. We know what it takes to make a kit to withstand anything that comes your way, so you can focus on performing when it counts.

In this guide, we’re going to look at some winter triathlon training tips, how you should be wearing layers, and how you can make the most out of the Australian winter.

Why Winter Training Matters for Triathletes

For your winter training, you need to switch the focus from peak speed to building durable fitness foundations. Aim for consistent aerobic work to help prepare your body for harder, more race-specific sessions as you get closer to race season.

Winter is a great time for:

      Building aerobic endurance

      Improving cycling strength

      Increasing run durability

      Refining swim technique

      Developing consistency without race pressure

      Strength and mobility work

You’ll find that most experienced triathletes use winter as a time to focus on the areas that are more difficult to find time for during peak racing season.

Common Winter Training Challenges

Of course, our winters do vary depending on your state and regions, but the most common issues we see for triathletes include:

      Cold early morning starts

      Wind chill during cycling

      Wet roads and rain

      Reduced motivation

      Overdressing and overheating

      Poor visibility in darker conditions

If you really want to tackle these issues, then you need to prepare yourself properly so your training sessions remain productive instead of uncomfortable.

How Should You Dress for Winter Triathlon Training?

Your winter triathlon apparel needs to be able to balance insulation, breathability, and moisture management.

The most common mistake triathletes make is wearing heavy layers that trap the sweat, which makes athletes colder as they work through their session.

Instead of heavy layers, your winter endurance apparel should:

      Trap enough warmth without overheating

Wick sweat away from the skin

      Block wind where needed

      Allow freedom of movement

Dry quickly after efforts or rain exposure

Luckily, our winter cycling and activewear collections here at SCODY are designed to be incorporated seamlessly into layering systems that help you to adapt quickly to our ever-changing Aussie winter conditions rather than leaving you in bulky layers that don’t work.

What to Wear for Winter Cycling Training

Thanks to the wind chill on the bike, you’ll probably find yourself feeling colder during cycling training than in any other session.

Our top tip is to start feeling slightly cooler than you’re used to. If you feel perfectly warm when you’re standing still, remove a layer as your body temperature will quickly rise once you get going.

A good, long sleeved cycle jersey is a brilliant base. Ours are made with breathable fabrics to help you regulate your body temperature as the session gets tougher.

Next, a thermal cycle jacket makes a smart addition as you can trap a layer of warm air between the layers, yet still have the flexibility to remove it should you get too warm.

Finally, over the top, you need to add a windproof gilet to keep the damp air out. Of course, you can pair these layers with arm warmers and your winter bibs or knicks.

You may consider adding leg warmers or knee warmers for the days when it’s really cold outside, and a good pair of cycling gloves is always a welcome addition! Ours come in both fingerless and long-finger varieties.

What Should Triathletes Wear for Winter Running?

Your body generates more heat when running compared to cycling, so you’ll require fewer layers if you’re going for a winter run. To be honest, the biggest goal is to keep yourself dry without overheating.

A lightweight running top and some decent running tights are perfect for our winter conditions here in Australia. If it’s raining, you can add a jacket or a gilet over the top too.

If you find yourself training in poor visibility, don’t be afraid to reach for apparel with reflective detailing or brighter designs to help you remain visible at all times.

How Should You Approach Winter Swim Training?

Some triathletes take training to the pool, as swimming during winter can be pretty tough. It is a great time to focus on stroke efficiency, breathing control, body position, and your swim strength, so it is well worth continuing your efforts over winter.

Our lightweight towel is always good to have nearby, and we always recommend athletes dry off quickly, change into warm layers, and avoid sitting in wet gear once training finishes.

Why Layering Is Better Than Heavy Winter Gear

Adaptable layering systems are every athlete's secret weapon over winter.

Your base layer needs to move sweat away from the skin, whilst a thermal layer can provide warmth and insulation. Finally, an outer protective layer will help to keep out the wind or light rain.

This method is a safe system that will help you to adjust your comfort levels no matter how many times the conditions change!

Winter Training Recovery Matters More

If you don’t allow yourself recovery time, cold-weather training can increase fatigue and even lead to injury.

We always try to prioritise:

      Warm recovery nutrition

      Staying hydrated

      Dry clothing immediately post-session

      Proper sleep

      Mobility work

How SCODY Designs Winter Apparel for Australian Conditions

Our winters here in Australia are obviously going to be very different from conditions in Europe or North America.

Most Aussie athletes will experience:

      Cool mornings

      Mild daytime temperatures

      Coastal wind

      Variable weather

      Rapid temperature changes

All of our garments are designed and tested with these conditions in mind, which is why when you shop Australian-made, you are getting the quality needed to deal with local conditions effectively, which you wouldn’t get from imported kit.
