International Women’s Day: Celebrating the Women Shaping Endurance Sport

With International Women’s Day happening, it’s a brilliant chance to celebrate the achievements, strength and progress of the amazing women in sport.

In endurance sport especially, women are continuing to redefine what’s possible from local clubs to global competitions, and the number of women participating in endurance sports continues to grow.

Here at SCODY, we have been lucky enough to see this growth firsthand through the amazing athletes we design apparel for. We’ve met strong women who balance careers, families, training and competitions whilst continuing to push performance boundaries.

International Women’s Day isn’t just about recognising these women, but it’s a fantastic opportunity to highlight where these athletes need support, funding, stronger communities and even kit innovations to help women continue to succeed in sport.

The Rise of Female Athletes

One of the biggest and most important developments in modern athletics is the rise of women competing in endurance sports.

Across all disciplines, like triathlon and cycling, the rate of women participating has increased as more women discover the huge mental and physical benefits of endurance training.

Some of the things helping women access these sports are:

     Increased access to community-based events

     Greater visibility of female athletes

     Improved coaching and support networks

     Apparel designed specifically for women

In sports like triathlon, where community culture is at the forefront of the event, the community culture has helped more and more women not only take part in the sport but continue to build groups of women who build each other up when the going gets tough.

We’re continuing to see larger organisations host opportunities for female participation, not just at elite levels but at the grassroots as well.

The Strength of the Endurance Sport Community

One of the best things about endurance sport is the incredible community, both in person and online.

In both triathlon and cycling clubs across Australia and New Zealand, we’ve experienced warm, welcoming environments where athletes of all levels come together to train, compete, and encourage each other through even the toughest events.

For many women, casual work out groups or park run clubs can quickly invite them into this community, forming a gateway to their first race.

Training buddies, coaches and local events all help to create supportive pathways for:

     First-time racers

     Age group competitors

     Long-distance athletes

Women returning to sport after time away

These networks are all vital in helping female athletes build confidence and consistency in a previously male dominated sport.

Women Competing on the World Stage

Of course, this spike in participation is also reflected at the international competition level as we see more and more women take to the world stage to represent their country in triathlon and cycling events.

Age group athletes are some of the most exciting to follow on social media, as many feature local groups that you can join in with. These athletes often have valuable advice or know people who can help you get a triathlon bike fitted, a tri suit customised, or they know the best spots for a swim.

Age group racing is unique because it celebrates athletes balancing everyday life with elite-level commitment. Many competitors train around work, families and other responsibilities while preparing for world-class events.

Why Apparel Matters for Female Athletes

So many companies are selling off men’s kits in pink or flowery designs to appeal to a female audience. In reality, performance apparel that is designed to fit a woman’s body and is not just a modified men’s garment is one of the biggest game changers in the sport.

Comfort, fit and fabric technology all affect your performance during long training sessions and on race day. Speedy transitions and marginal gains are what make a triathlon so competitive, so it’s important you have the kit you need to succeed.

Sports apparel designed for women must consider things like:

     Different body shapes and proportions

     Support requirements

     Comfort during long-duration exercise

     Aerodynamic positioning on the bike

It’s these small details that can significantly improve your confidence and performance come race day.

The Importance of Women-Specific Design

When sports apparel is designed with women in mind, the benefits go way beyond just comfort and visual appeal.

Our female athletes often report improvements in:

     Freedom of movement

     Breathability and temperature regulation

     Reduced distraction during competition

     Overall confidence on race day

For female triathletes, their apparel must function at its best across all three disciplines, each with its own unique demands.

The best designed tri suits and cycling kits allow female athletes to focus entirely on their performance without worrying about discomfort.

Supporting Women in Sport Through Australian Manufacturing

When we start supporting women in sport, it also means we must support the industries that help enable performance.

Here at SCODY, we design apparel and manufacture our kit right here in Australia. Local manufacturing allows us to have greater control over production quality, garment construction and design refinement.

We’re also proud to be able to support skilled Australians by offering them local jobs, which helps to ensure consistent performance standards for all our SCODY athletes.

By manufacturing locally, it means all of our garments can be tested, refined and improved through direct feedback from our athletes. This relationship is absolutely essential in aiding peak performance across all sports.

Support Our Female Ambassadors

International Women’s Day is also a wonderful chance to show some love for our fantastic female ambassadors. Go and follow them on social media to see how their journeys as female athletes play out.

Celebrating Women in Sport

International Women’s Day reminds us that sport is about more than competition.

It is about community, resilience and progress.

Every athlete who shows up to train, race and support others contributes to a stronger and more inclusive sporting world.

Today, we celebrate those athletes and the future they are building for the next generation of women in sport.
